Decent but $$$ - Apple Smart Battery Case Review - iPhone 7 Battery Cases

The Smart Battery Case is handy when you need extra power while keeping your iPhone relatively "slim"

24+ Case Comparison Tool: me choose what to review next: Apple Smart Battery case is an odd looking case and it doesn't look like it would be something Apple Design. But it works.

For my Apple Smart Battery Case review, I've given this case a score of 4 Eh's out of 5. On a case-by-case basis, the Smart Battery case scores a little higher the Mophie Juice Pack Air. However, my scoring system doesn't take into the account the extra functionality you can get with Mophie's accessories. If you need to see a side by side comparison of the two products, check out my comparison table!

For design, the Apple Smart Battery case feels thinner than it looks. Apple didn't incorporate the thickness of the battery into the edge of the case. The entire package, despite looking slimmer weighs as much as the Mophie Juice Pack Air for the 7 Plus.

The Smart Battery case fits the iPhone quite well and the silicone outer shell wears well from general usage. Installing the iPhone is neat as you peel the top of the iPhone back and slide it into the case. Most other battery cases have pieces that you have to snap together and or lose. This is important to me when it comes to choosing battery cases.

The iPhone in the Smart Battery case doesn't slide around easily. Despite the silicone texture, you won't have too much trouble pulling your iPhone out of your pocket. Your pocket may come with it occasionally.

For protection, the Apple Smart Battery case isn't drop-rated but it can take a hit. It has average dust protection and doesn't come with a screen protector. You'd think paying over $100 dollars for this case would score you something more than a spare battery. Wait, it's an Apple product right? So they're going to stick it to you.

The edges of the case are high enough that it will keep the iPhone's screen off a flat surface, even with a screen protector.

Accessing your iPhone in the case is exactly like the regular Apple Silicone case. It also collects dust and hair like the Apple Silicone Case as noted by SpikyTech1980 on Instagram. MrCline on instagram also noted that his white case still looks clean as it did when he got it! The Smart Battery case has a Lightning connector rather the usual micro-USB cable so you don't have to carry around an extra cable. Sound coming from the iPhone in the Smart Battery case didn't have a noticeable effect.

When it comes to the actual battery part of the case, I got approx. 85-90% per charge so it might be close to doubling your iPhone’s battery life. Definitely enough to get you through a night of shenanigans.

You can charge the case by itself and there is a single LED that glows orange when charging and green when charged. The best part the case is that the current charge level is displayed in your widget area instead of four LED's. This works way better than the LED setup.

From my understanding, you can't stop the battery case from charging your iPhone. The moment the device is in, it is charging.

Before I get to why I would get this case, if you want this case as gift, share this video with the person who’s going to buy it for you! Or if you know somebody who needs spare power for whatever reason, tell them about the Apple Smart Battery case.
